BACKGROUNDER

CIX is organized by Achilles Media Ltd., a leading event management firm focused on facilitated networking and noted for the quality of the content of its other events including nextMEDIA and the Banff World Television Festival.

Event Chair - Robert Montgomery

Robert Montgomery is the CEO of Achilles Media Ltd. in Toronto, a business-to-business events and information company that produces some of the world’s leading media events including the Banff World Television Festival, nextMEDIA and History Makers. He is also an investor in several companies in the media, technology and business services sectors.

Robert has been an executive and adviser for media, communications and technology companies and the investment community for many years. His work has generally been in the areas of operations, strategy, financing and development; market, financial and public policy analysis; and fairness opinions and valuations.

Until 2000, Robert was President, Americas and a member of the management board at the Fantastic Corporation, a Swiss broadband software provider where Robert was instrumental in the company’s IPO. During this time Robert was also Non-Executive Chairman of Media Content plc, a UK-based media rights company which he co-founded and took public on the London Stock Exchange’s AIM market. Before this, Robert was Managing Director at Kagan World Media in London, a media and communications research and consulting company where he was responsible for the firm’s European and Asia Pacific operations. Before this, Robert co-founded Digital Media International, an events and publishing company focused on the digital media markets in Europe and Asia. Prior to this, Robert ran international financial and technology publications for Euromoney plc, and what is now Informa plc, in London.

Over the last 8 years, he has lectured at more than 100 bootcamps, financing forums and industry conferences. He has trained over 3000 entrepreneurs who collectively raised more $2.1B from a wide variety of investment sources.

Event Chair – Sean Wise

Sean sits on the Boards of several young technology companies, as well as the Banff Venture Forum and the Toronto Venture Group.   He is the Chair of the 2007 Canadian Venture Forum and a member of both the Law Society of Upper Canada and the Canadian Venture Capital Association.  He also works with many not-for-profit groups including the Hospital for Sick Kids.

Sean’s monthly column (entitled Wise Words) on Venture Capital and Entrepreneurship appears in the Globe and Mail.  His column was recently published as “Best of” collection (entitled Wise Words: Lessons in Entrepreneurship & Venture Capital, Vol 1.) and is available at www.Amazon.com. Sean also hosts podcast interviews with business leaders from around the world on his blog:  www.SeanWise.com

Sean studied Engineering and Economics at Carleton University before going on to get his Law and MBA degrees from the University of Ottawa.

Sean helped found Ernst & Young's Venture Capital Advisory Group in Canada and now undertakes selective engagements from young companies looking for strategic guidance on capital raising and growth through the five person consultancy, Wise Mentor Capital (www.WiseMentorCapital.com)

The CBC retained Sean to be their Industry Advisor and Online Host for their upcoming business reality show on venture capital and entrepreneurship: Dragons’ Den (www.INSIDEtheDRAGONSden.com).  In light of his participation in the show and after witnessing him auditioning contestants Sean was dubbed by the press as the “Dragons’ Keeper”.

Event Chair - Rick Nathan

Mr. Nathan is a member of the Investment Committee. Prior to joining Kensington, Mr. Nathan was Managing Director of Goodmans Venture Group, a division of Goodmans LLP. In that role, he acted as legal counsel and as strategic business advisor to entrepreneurs and emerging growth companies and to private equity investors in the Canadian market. Mr. Nathan also had responsibility for a related investment portfolio. Prior to joining Goodmans, Mr. Nathan was a founding partner of Brightspark, one of Canada’s leading early-stage venture capital funds. Prior to founding Brightspark, Mr. Nathan spent more than 10 years as a corporate and securities lawyer at Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt LLP, including as leader of the firm’s Technology Business Group. He is the current President of CVCA – Canada’s Venture Capital and Private Equity Association, and has served as a Director of the Centre for Innovation Law and Policy at the University of Toronto and a member of the Canadian e Business Opportunities Roundtable. Mr. Nathan holds a BA (Computer Science) from Dartmouth College and an LLB from the University of Toronto.
